iPhone 18 Tipped for Early 2027 Launch With Bigger Battery and Faster A20 Chip

Apple’s standard iPhone 18 is expected to reach buyers in the first half of 2027, with an early 2027 launch looking the most likely window, according to a fresh leak that points to two meaningful upgrades for the regular model: a larger battery and a faster processor. The report comes from well-known Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station, writing on the social platform Weibo.

The timing reflects a change in how Apple releases its phones. For years, the company unveiled its full iPhone range together at a single September event. This year it broke that pattern, launching only the Pro models from the iPhone 18 series and revealing the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at its “Surprise and shine” event on September 9, 2026, with pre-orders from September 12 and shipping from September 18. The standard models were held back, and reports now suggest they will arrive separately in early 2027.

Bigger Battery and Faster A20 Chip

The heart of the leak is the claim that the standard iPhone 18 will offer better battery life through a combination of a larger battery and a more power-efficient processor. According to Digital Chat Station, Apple plans to fit the device with a bigger battery than its predecessor, although the tipster did not reveal its exact capacity. Battery life is one of the first things buyers ask about when choosing a phone, and even a modest increase can be felt every day.

The second upgrade is the chip inside the phone. The iPhone 18 is expected to feature Apple’s A20 chipset, manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 2-nanometre process, a genuine generational step from the 3nm process used for the A19 Pro in the iPhone 17 Pro. TSMC’s published figures put the new process at roughly 10 to 15 per cent faster at the same power, or 25 to 30 per cent more efficient at the same speed, so the phone should run quicker while using less energy.

There is a catch, and it is one Apple buyers have grown used to. The standard iPhone 18 will reportedly use a less powerful version of the A20 processor than the A20 Pro found in the Pro models. Even so, the move to the 2nm process should still bring a clear improvement in performance and efficiency over the chip in the current standard model, and that gain, working alongside the larger battery, is what should make the difference in daily use.

Smaller Dynamic Island Will Remain Exclusive to Pro Models

Not every change is coming to the standard model, however. While the iPhone 18 could receive real improvements in performance and battery life, it will reportedly miss out on one design upgrade. According to the tipster, Apple’s smaller Dynamic Island will remain exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro series, so the standard model is expected to keep the existing Dynamic Island design rather than adopt the smaller version introduced with the Pro lineup.

The Dynamic Island, the pill-shaped cutout at the top of the screen that houses the front camera and sensors and expands to show alerts and live activities, has become one of the most recognisable parts of a modern iPhone. Keeping the smaller version exclusive to the Pro phones is a deliberate way for Apple to preserve a visible difference between the two tiers, and a reminder that it still reserves some of its newest design work for the phones that cost the most.

Another Price Increase Expected

The leak also suggests that Apple could increase the price of the standard iPhone 18. The tipster did not provide an exact figure, but the possible increase comes amid rising component costs across the smartphone industry, and the new 2nm chips are part of that pressure, since wafers built on TSMC’s 2nm process are far more expensive to produce than the 3nm wafers they replace.

There is recent history to support the concern. Apple already increased the price of the iPhone 17 by 100 dollars last year, and the iPhone 18 Pro started at 1,199 dollars, up 100 dollars year over year. For the standard iPhone 18, the final price remains unknown, and buyers will have to wait for Apple’s official announcement to know whether the bigger battery and faster chip come with a bigger bill.

For now, everything about the standard iPhone 18 remains unconfirmed by Apple itself. The company has not officially confirmed the specifications, pricing or launch date, and every detail so far comes from leaks and supply-chain reports. Still, the shape of the phone is becoming clearer: a familiar design, a bigger battery, a faster and more efficient chip, and a launch in the first half of 2027. For the many buyers who do not need the Pro camera system or the smallest Dynamic Island, that combination may be enough to make the wait worthwhile, provided the price does not climb so far that it undermines the appeal of the standard model.
