Saim Ayub Released From Pakistan ODI Squad as Sahibzada Farhan Steps In for Tri-Series Run-In

Pakistan have made another change to their squad for the ongoing one-day tri-series, releasing opening batter Saim Ayub for the remainder of the tournament and calling up Sahibzada Farhan as his replacement. The decision follows a request from Ayub himself, who asked to return to domestic cricket in order to work on his batting form and rebuild his confidence after a difficult run in the series.

According to the Pakistan Cricket Board, the left-hander spoke with head coach Mike Hesson about his situation before making the request. The team management and the national selection committee accepted his decision, praising his honesty about his recent performances. It is a mature call from a young player under pressure, and one that the management clearly respected rather than resisted, allowing him to step away and find his rhythm away from the international spotlight.

The numbers explain why the conversation took place. Ayub has managed only 21 runs in three matches in the tournament, scoring seven against Sri Lanka in the opening game before falling for eight and six against England. For an opener expected to set the tone at the top of the order, that is a run of form that helps neither the player nor the team, and a spell in domestic cricket offers him the chance to score runs and rediscover the fluency that earned him his place.

His replacement, Sahibzada Farhan, arrives in good standing with the set-up, having recently captained Pakistan in the three-match Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka. He will join the one-day squad for the remaining matches of the tri-series, which also features England and Sri Lanka, and will hope to press his own claim for a longer run in the side. The change is the second in quick succession for Pakistan: on Sunday, the board released left-arm wrist-spinner Sufiyan Muqeem to play domestic cricket, taking into account the conditions at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, with young batter Maaz Sadaqat added as cover for players carrying minor fitness concerns.

Crucially, the changes come with Pakistan’s place in the final already secure. The Shaheen Shah Afridi-led side have won their first three matches, the latest a thrilling one-wicket victory over England in Lahore on Sunday, when Shadab Khan struck an unbeaten 113 and shared an 89-run last-wicket stand with Haris Rauf to seal the win. Pakistan will next face Sri Lanka in the fifth match of the tournament at Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday, October 27, before the final of the seven-match series at the same ground on October 31. With the trophy in sight, the management will hope the refreshed squad can carry their winning momentum all the way to the final.
