Apple Is Reportedly Building a Giant Foldable iPad With a 20-Inch Screen

Apple is said to be working on a foldable iPad with a screen that stretches to around 20 inches when opened up, a device that would blur the line between a tablet and a laptop. The report comes from Chinese tipster Kang, who says Apple is testing a large foldable tablet that folds down into something far more portable, giving users a laptop-sized display without carrying a laptop at all. The claim lines up with earlier predictions from well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has long suggested that Apple’s first foldable iPad could arrive in 2028.

According to the reports, the device would carry a foldable display of somewhere between 18 and 20 inches, letting owners switch between a big-screen tablet and a compact folded form. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has previously described something similar, a machine resembling two iPad Pro tablets placed side by side. A major focus for Apple, the reports say, is making the fold itself as invisible as possible, so the screen looks smooth and unbroken when it is fully open. Kuo has also pointed to the materials involved, with Corning expected to supply ultra-thin glass for the display and General Interface Solutions handling the cutting, edge finishing, inspection and packaging of that glass. Both companies are already said to be involved in Apple’s wider foldable plans.

The idea appears to take some inspiration from Huawei, which launched its MateBook Fold in August 2026 with an 18-inch dual-layer OLED screen and a Kirin X90 Plus chip. That machine is just 7.3 millimetres thick on one side when unfolded, comes with a built-in stand and stylus support, folds into a notebook shape and sells from around 3,750 dollars in Sky White, Phantom Black and Streamer Gold. Whether Apple follows a similar path or goes its own way is still unclear, and the company itself has said nothing official about the device, its specifications or when it might appear.

If the 2028 timeline holds, early estimates suggest Apple might ship between 500,000 and one million of the foldable iPads in the first year. That modest figure reflects how difficult large foldable screens are to build and how expensive they remain to produce, which would almost certainly push the price well above a standard iPad. For now the device remains firmly in rumour territory, but the steady stream of reports suggests Apple is serious about a foldable future, and a giant folding iPad could be one of the most interesting products it has attempted in years.
