TikTok Shop Breaks Out on Its Own With a Standalone Shopping App in Southeast Asia

TikTok has quietly launched a separate shopping app, giving its fast-growing e-commerce business a home of its own. The standalone TikTok Shop app is now available for Android and iPhone users in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines, where shoppers can browse products, watch shopping livestreams, and order without opening the main TikTok app.

TikTok Shop Gets Its Own App

The launch came with no press release or launch event. It was first spotted by social media consultant Matt Navarra and reported by TechCrunch on 5 November, and TikTok has not formally announced the app or responded to requests for comment. App store records suggest it was first listed on 27 October, but the company itself has said nothing about its plans.

The app offers a dedicated shopping experience built on the formula that made TikTok Shop work inside the main app: personalised recommendations, products found through videos and livestreams, and checkout inside the app. Shoppers can also use app-only deals, including free shipping and benefits for first-time customers, and they can pay securely, track orders, and contact support around the clock. None of it requires the main TikTok app, so a shopper does not have to wade through a feed of videos to get there.

Until now, TikTok Shop has lived inside the main TikTok app. It began as a shopping feature in 2021, letting users buy products promoted through videos, livestreams, and listings, and it has since grown into one of the largest e-commerce businesses in the world. Estimates from Momentum Works and Tabcut put its global sales at 64.3 billion dollars in 2025, almost double the 33 billion dollars of the year before. Southeast Asia remains its engine, with sales doubling to 45.6 billion dollars, while the United States contributed 15.1 billion dollars.

TikTok Takes on Amazon and Temu

With its own app, TikTok Shop now competes much more directly with the established names of online shopping, above all Amazon and Temu. It can reach customers who want to shop but have no interest in a social media app, and build a destination designed for buying rather than for watching videos. App-exclusive discounts could also tempt existing TikTok users to shop in the dedicated app instead.

The move also reverses a rivalry that has run the other way for three years. In December 2022, Amazon launched Inspire, a feed of short videos and photos inside its shopping app modelled on TikTok. The experiment did not last: Amazon confirmed in February 2025 that Inspire was no longer available, and has since concentrated on artificial intelligence tools such as its Rufus shopping assistant. Now TikTok is borrowing from Amazon’s world, building a conventional shopping app of the kind Amazon has always run.

If the standalone app eventually reaches the United States, the contest would widen, putting TikTok alongside Amazon, Temu, Walmart, and Target. A dedicated app would let TikTok compete for American shoppers as a shopping destination rather than as a feature inside a video app. For now, though, TikTok has given no indication of when, or whether, it intends to bring the app to the American market.

When Will TikTok Shop Launch in Other Countries?

For now, the standalone app is available only in the four Southeast Asian markets where it first appeared. Users in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines can download it from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store, and it has not yet appeared in the stores of other countries, including Indonesia, Vietnam, the United Kingdom, and the United States. TikTok has not announced a timetable for expanding it further, with no announcement and no explanation of why these four countries were chosen first. The most likely reason is that Southeast Asia is where TikTok Shop is already strongest, the natural place to test whether shoppers want a separate app. The region’s online shopping market grew to 157.6 billion dollars in 2025, according to Momentum Works, and TikTok Shop is now the second-largest platform there behind Shopee, with around 53 per cent of the market.

TikTok Expands Beyond Social Media

The shopping app is part of a wider effort by TikTok to grow beyond short videos and social networking. The company has already moved into games, restaurant guides, sports hubs, hotel booking, and short-form dramas known as microdramas, and it is exploring payment services. Each move takes TikTok closer to becoming a collection of services covering more of a user’s daily life, like the super-apps that dominate much of Asia.

Whether shoppers want a separate TikTok Shop app is the question that will decide how far this goes. A dedicated app suits regular shoppers, but it also asks them to download and open yet another app. The quiet launch suggests TikTok itself is not sure of the answer, and is content to let the app prove itself in four markets first. If it succeeds there, the world’s biggest online retailers may soon find TikTok competing with them for their orders, not just their customers’ attention.
