UK Opens Fully Funded Chevening-ABL Master’s Scholarships for Pakistani Students

Pakistani graduates hoping to study in Britain have a new route to a fully funded master’s degree, after the United Kingdom’s Chevening programme joined forces with Allied Bank Limited to create a dedicated scholarship for students from Pakistan. The partnership, announced by the British High Commission, will back two scholars every year for three years, giving six talented professionals the chance to complete a one-year postgraduate course at a leading British university. The first awards will go to students beginning in the 2027-28 academic year, chosen from the pool of people who have already applied through the normal Chevening process.

Applications for the following year are expected to open in August 2027, with successful candidates starting in Britain in 2028. With only two places available each year, competition is likely to be intense.

Chevening-ABL Scholarship Programme Details

The new scheme brings together two very different partners with a shared aim. Chevening is the British government’s flagship international scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office together with partner organisations around the world. Allied Bank, meanwhile, becomes the first Pakistani organisation to fund a Chevening partnership of this kind from within the country, a point the British High Commission highlighted when the arrangement was announced.

Under the arrangement, each scholar will pursue a one-year master’s degree in Britain, in a field connected to technology, economic development or the skills Pakistan will need in the coming years. The idea is to help them build international experience and leadership skills, then bring that knowledge back home and contribute to their own communities and professions.

Fields of Study Covered

The programme will focus on subjects that the organisers consider central to Pakistan’s economic and technological future. The priority fields named in the announcement are artificial intelligence, technology, cybersecurity, digital transformation, economics and financial inclusion. Together, they cover a wide stretch of modern professional life, from building secure digital systems to widening access to banking and financial services.

Applicants will still need to choose master’s courses that fit those themes and are eligible under Chevening rules. A course only loosely related to the priority areas is unlikely to be enough, so candidates should show a clear line from past experience, through the chosen degree, to a concrete plan for the future. They must also satisfy the entry conditions of their chosen universities, which can differ from one institution to another.

Scholarship Benefits and Financial Coverage

A Chevening award is designed to remove the main financial barriers to studying abroad. Under the established funding framework, a full scholarship normally covers university tuition fees in full, along with economy-class travel to and from the United Kingdom. Scholars also receive a monthly living allowance to help with day-to-day costs such as rent, food and transport, with those studying in London generally receiving more than those elsewhere, reflecting the higher cost of living in the capital.

The package usually goes further than fees and a stipend, with support for the visa application, allowances on arrival and departure, and help with certain other eligible travel costs. Beyond the money, Chevening offers professional development and networking opportunities, and scholars join an international community whose contacts often last well beyond graduation.

Eligibility Criteria for Pakistani Applicants

Pakistani candidates must meet the standard Chevening eligibility rules before they can be considered. Applicants must hold Pakistani citizenship and hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies them for entry to a British master’s programme. They must also have finished their undergraduate studies at least two years before the relevant application deadline, and they need at least 2,800 hours of work after graduation, roughly equivalent to two years of full-time employment.

That experience can come from paid work, internships or voluntary roles, provided it is properly documented and relevant to the applicant’s plans. Applicants must also choose three eligible master’s courses and secure an unconditional offer from at least one of them by the set deadline. Finally, successful scholars must agree to return home for at least two years after finishing, underlining the programme’s focus on long-term contribution.

How to Apply for Chevening-ABL Scholarships

For future cycles, candidates will follow the official Chevening application process once applications open. The first step is to visit the official Chevening website, select Pakistan from the list of eligible countries, and read the eligibility guidance in full. From there, applicants can shortlist three suitable master’s courses and begin the online form, which asks for accurate details about education, work history, leadership activities and career goals.

Candidates should take time over the written sections, where selectors judge motivation, judgement and potential impact. Chevening requires applicants to write their answers themselves, without artificial intelligence generating the essay responses. Shortlisted candidates will provide supporting documents and attend an interview, where they should explain why they chose their courses and how they plan to use the experience on returning to Pakistan.
