The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has issued a fresh public alert urging citizens across Pakistan to protect their Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs), personal documents and other sensitive information as online fraud continues to rise.
In its warning, the cybercrime agency cautioned that personal information shared unnecessarily — with individuals, on social media, or on unverified websites — can easily be harvested and misused for fraudulent purposes. The NCCIA specifically advised people to hand over copies of their CNICs only to credible and trusted entities, and to think twice before uploading identity documents anywhere online.
The agency noted that people routinely share personal information in everyday settings without considering the consequences. Scammers in Pakistan increasingly use stolen CNIC copies and personal data to open fake mobile accounts, apply for fraudulent loans and carry out identity theft, turning a moment of carelessness into a long legal and financial headache.

The NCCIA stressed that protecting personal identity is an essential part of cybersecurity. As more of daily life — banking, government services, shopping and communication — moves online, a leaked CNIC copy can travel far beyond its intended recipient within minutes, putting the victim at risk of cyber fraud they never saw coming.
For those who discover their personal information is being used wrongfully, the agency advised preserving all relevant evidence — screenshots, messages, receipts and transaction records — and reporting the matter to the appropriate authorities instead of ignoring it. Documented complaints, it said, give investigators a far better chance of tracing the misuse and catching the culprits.
The alert comes amid a broader push by Pakistan’s cybercrime authorities to raise digital awareness among citizens. Alongside the NCCIA’s advice, experts recommend enabling two-factor authentication on key accounts, avoiding public Wi-Fi for sensitive transactions, and always verifying the credentials of any organization that asks for copies of identity documents.
