GCU Lahore’s Maths School Wins European Recognition Again

Government College University Lahore’s Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences has once again been recognized by the European Mathematical Society as an Emerging Regional Center of Excellence for the 2027–2030 term, restoring a distinction the school first earned fifteen years ago.

The school first received the ERCE designation in 2011, when it became the first institution in the world to earn the distinction. The renewed four-year term places the Abdus Salam School back among the leading mathematics research institutions of the Global South.

The decision was taken at the October meeting of the EMS Committee for Developing Countries and communicated to the school by committee chair Prof. Cónall Kelly. The Emerging Regional Center of Excellence designation is awarded to mathematical research institutions in developing countries that demonstrate strong research capabilities and play a leading role in postgraduate education.

GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Omer Chaudhry attributed the achievement to institutional reforms and initiatives introduced over the past 18 months. He congratulated ASSMS In-Charge Prof. Dr. Khurram Shabbir and his team, describing the development as a significant achievement for the university and Pakistan’s academic community.

The recognition carries special weight because of the school’s namesake. The Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences is named after Nobel laureate Dr. Abdus Salam, Pakistan’s only Nobel laureate in physics, and has built a reputation for advanced research in pure and applied mathematics. For GCU Lahore, one of Pakistan’s oldest seats of learning, the EMS recognition is a validation of its push to compete internationally in higher education research.

The vice chancellor also reaffirmed GCU’s commitment to strengthening its national and international standing in higher education and research, signaling that the university intends to build on the EMS recognition with expanded research funding, postgraduate programs, and international academic collaborations.

With the 2027–2030 term ahead, the Abdus Salam School now has four more years under the European Mathematical Society’s spotlight — and a chance to convert a restored title into a lasting position for Pakistan on the world mathematics map.
